Local riders made the podium in all categories.

Red Deer’s Max Banville won a snowboard for the best single trick of the evening – a front flip 50-50 with a 180 off the rail. Hometown heroes Jaden Duggan won 1st place and Dylan Hermany tied for 3rd in the men 16 and older category; Alexander Romanov took 4th place and honourable mention in the men 15 and under group; and Kallie Murray took 4th place in women’s competition.

Women’s 1st place went to Calgarian Kelsey Morin; Edmonton’s Jack Dinius finished 1st in the younger men’s group. All the top finishers won iPods courtesy of Alberta Snowboarding.

A second snowboard went to another Red Deer rider in door prizes, as did Skull Candy earphones, skate decks, hats, hoodies and t-shirts – all prizing provided by event sponsor The Source.

Red Deer’s rail jam was the fourth in the series which has also had stops in Banff, Calgary and Edmonton. The events are hosted by snowboard club Riders on Board and made possible through funding from Alberta Snowboarding. The Red Deer event was also made possible through the donation of a rail to Canyon Hill from Riders on Board and Josh Duncan, COP’s pipe and park groomer who took time out of his week to build the course in Red Deer.

The final Monster Rail Jam is on Friday, March 6th at Canada Olympic Park.

March Weekend Event Notice

EVENT NOTICE
EH GAMES: SERIES FINALS
Half Pipe (FIS & The mountain itself is located just outside the town of Invermere approximately 3 hours from Calgary. The terrain at Panorama is an awesome place to ride with lots of sick bowls and chutes. The addition of the terrain park makes Panorama an awesome place to visit. The park has been really well thought out and suites all level of riders. The skiable area at Panorama is huge so it always feels like you have plenty of room. The accommodation at Panorama is great and there is something for all budgets.
After a day of riding check out Panorama’s selection of places to eat and drink. The Jack Pine pub has a really good local vibe and is an awesome place to hang out. Also check out Mile high Pizza and the Picnic Deli.

Overall if you’re looking for a different place to ride which isn’t a million miles away check out Panorama Mountain Village.

Special thanks to Kirby Brown who took great care of us while we were there.

Old School Night- Saturday Jan 24th

Alberta Snowboarding is holding it’s first annual “Old School Night” So break out those retro outfits and come and kick it old school! Rewards for braving the skin-chafing wind and snow were two giveaway snowboards in doorprize draws, iPods for winners in each of the three categories, and a chance for local riders to show their stuff to one of the world’s premier snowboard film crews from Transworld Magazine.

Joe Carlino from Transworld was in town to film local rider Jed Anderson and stepped up to announce the event. Afterward he said he was “blown away by the number of talented riders.”

The next stop on the Source Monster Rail Jam tour is Edmonton, on January 27th. There’s an event in Red Deer in February and a final back at COP on March 6th.

Dec 12 Results:

Men 15 and under
1st Jordan Blain and best trick
2nd Tyler McRae
3rd Jamie Blain

Girls
1st Jenn Schuller
2nd Brooke Voight
3rd Alison Vizina

Men 16 and over
1st Matt Munn
2nd Matthew Butel
3rd Bryce Parry
Best trick Evan Fair

For more information contact:
Beth St. Amour, Riders on Board
403 807-7630

World Snowboard Day- Sunday 21st December at COP

Sunday December 21st is World snowboard day. I’m excited and freestyle riders should be too.” Lange won’t give away all of his secrets for the new terrain park, but here’s an idea of what to expect.
Last year, the park was divided into the upper rail park and the lower jump park. This year, the rail line and jump line will run parallel to each other down the entire length of Showoff, increasing the number of back to back jumps and/or rails to approximately twelve, compared to last year’s six.
Most jumps will have double take-offs, varying in size from medium to extra-large.
A permanent “Big Air” jump will be built at the base of the park, to provide local pro’s with something to train on.
The park program and design is being built with progression in mind. The Showoff Terrain Park is for intermediate and advanced riders and will offer a gradual increase in difficulty from medium to extra-large. An entry level terrain park will offer small and medium features out of sight from the chairlift.
The new Showoff Terrain Park will be supervised by a full-time employee and a group of volunteers that will ensure all features are safe, educate users on progression and etiquette, and suggest appropriate features to match the skill level of riders.
The Small-Medium Terrain Park will be situated in the night skiing area and will have more surface features and plenty of small jumps for beginners to build confidence.

The snowmaking department is currently focusing their efforts on Showoff, preparing the run for pre-season race training in November. This increased snow coverage will facilitate the early construction of park features, and if weather permits, Lange plans to have part of the terrain park ready for opening day on December 12th.

New coach in town.

Calgary Snowboard Club hires former X games and US open winner Scott Gaffney as head coach of Snowboardcross team.

(November 5th, 2008 – Calgary, Ab) Calgary Snowboard Club is proud to announce the hiring of Scott Gaffney to our coaching team. Scott Gaffney will be the head coach of the High Performance SnowboardCross team. Scott Gaffney was one of the fastest snowboarders on the planet for almost a decade, winning such events as X games, US open and Whistler World Cup. He spent the latter part of his professional career being filmed and having his picture taken, appearing in such media as Standard films releases and Transworld snowboarding magazine. TEAM CSC is proud of the successes of riders that have trained with us, including current Olympic hopefuls Matt Morison, Mike Robertson, Korath Wright (BHM) and Masaki Shiba (JPN). We feel that Scott’s experience and coaching will add to this winning legacy of the Calgary Snowboard Club. Our alumni have gone on to win or podium in world cups and junior world championships, and we look forward to Scott bringing his winning qualities into coaching with the team.

On what makes a good team environment

Scott Gaffney: The joy of competition can be lost pretty quickly. Competitions can be stressful. As a competitor I remember and appreciate those key individuals that reminded me of the balance that’s needed; that we are snowboarding, we are here to have fun, and compete.

We are accepting registrations. I like to keep things simple and my current bar of choice is the Nectar bar from Clif. The great thing with this bar is they are totally organic and made from REAL ingredients. The organic ingredients add to the flavour and the bars taste fantastic and they are really easy to get down even if you’re feeling light headed. They have 2 servings of fruit in each bar and are a great source of fibre. The Nectar comes in a wide range of flavours and they are all pretty much delicious! The Clif Nectar bar is defiantly going in my jacket pocket this year. I’m stoked about the Arc’teryx Dually parka for this winter. The first thing you notice about the Dually is its weight. Coming in at 667g the Dually is incredibly light. As with all Arc’teryx product the design and build quality is fantastic and once you have the jacket on you realize that real care and attention has been put into the fit, and the details on the jacket look great. The features I really like about this jacket are the two way zipper which is really handy and the smooth knit gusseted sleeves which fit nice and snug, I also really like the fact the hood is helmet compatible. The technology in this jacket in frankly space age, for such a light weight jacket it has an incredible amount of warmth. The shell has been DWR treated so it’s pretty water resistant and the shell will not hold moisture. Even if it does get dropped in a plunge pool, the revolutionary insulation is incredibly hydro phobic – water will not cling and simply sheds away from the fiber making it amazingly fast drying. The Dually comes with its own stuff sack so it can be packed down quite small for travelling.

If you’re looking for a stylish lightweight jacket with an abundance of technical features then check out the Arc’teryx Dually Parka! Be sure to try this piece on before you buy though – it is sized larger than you might expect as it was designed as a final outer layer and will leave you plenty of room underneath for your softshell or covert. If you would like to see the jacket, give me a call at the ASA office and come and check it out. Alternatively go to the Arc’teryx website to check out the full range of products and see what’s new for fall ’08 http://www.arcteryx.com/

Hello my name is...

Hello my name is? ….. Adam Robertson has put together some pointers that will make you stronger come the start of the season.
Adam is a COPSBT performance SBX coach.

Here's what Adam had to say:

I love summer just as much as anyone, but also can’t wait to get back on the snow and start snowboarding. While we are waiting for that to happen there are many things we can be doing to get ready for that so that you can perform at your best and achieve what you want to on your snowboard. Whether you are just a young one and getting started into the world of competitive snowboarding or are a national team athlete there are many things that you can be doing to prepare yourself for the upcoming season.

We spend the whole year training for snowboardcross and snowboard year round. Of course the best thing you can do is SNOWBOARD year round. There are many options for this from the glaciers at Whistler and Mt Hood, to heading to the Southern Hemisphere and riding in New Zealand, Australia or South America. We just finished a camp in Whistler and will be heading to Argentina to train and race for 1 month in mid August.

Of course not everyone can snowboard year round, but you should be cross training in a number of activities:
1) Weight training (for older athletes under qualified supervision)
2) Skateboarding
3) Wakeboarding
4) Mountain biking- downhill or cross country both are great for endurance and for working the same skills as snowboarding when going downhill
5) Hiking
6) Running

If you are competing at a high level, one thing you should put some time into is getting a job and making some money to help your parents out as snowboarding cost’s money and the more you can help them the better.

Coffee with your Stampede breakfast?

What could be better than a great ASA travel mug to keep your Stampede breakfast brew hot!
Available to ASA members during Stampede are some awesome ASA mugs to give away. A common question is why I should use electrolytes?..... Well

A: Electrolytes are best consumed DURING activity. Consuming carbohydrates during activity enhances performance by providing a continuous supply of carbohydrate to working muscles. Your body stores a limited amount of carbohydrates and the harder you go, the faster you burn those carbohydrates. When you burn through the last of these stored carbohydrates, you run out of energy. By consuming carbohydrate during activity you will increase the length of time you can go. Drinking Electrolytes is also a good way of staying hydrated. It contains both carbohydrate and sodium, two key ingredients to absorbing fluid and maintaining hydration during exercise.

An office favourite is the electrolyte drink made by Clif. They taste great and are really easy on the stomach.
They can be checked out at http://www.clifbar.com/food/products_shot_electrolyte/1310

What's on your IPod?

This is a new feature which we will be posting every 2 weeks called what's on your IPod?
We want to know what you are currently listening to and what gets you amped to ride and train.
To start this feature this is what we are listening to in the ASA office.
Arcade Fire- Neon bible
Three inches of blood-Fire up the blades (thanks Cathy!)
Kaiser Chiefs-Yours truley, Angry mob
Iron Maiden-Somewhere back in time (best of)
Classified-Hitch Hikin' music
Public Enemy-Fear of a black planet
The Kooks-Inside in/inside out

If you want to share with the world what's on your IPod drop us a line at the ASA and if we like what we see your selection will be published and you will win a mystery prize!
albertasnowboarding@coda.ca

Happy Canada Day!!!

Happy Canada Day from the ASA!!!
