Riders on board builds coaching base.

Riders on Board is pleased to announce that it is continuing to focus on the development of Canadian coaches from grass roots to high performance.

Thanks to grants from CSF and Women-In-Motion, Riders was able to train eight new women coaches last season. An additional grant from Alberta Parks Sports Wildlife and Recreation enabled to club to send three women to Coaching Canada’s Sport Leadership Conference held in Calgary November 7 – 9. It will also fund their continuing education, including leading-edge technology training in the use of performance analysis software – Dartfish.

Riders on Board’s two high performance coaches – Jared Anderson and Karine Daze – have been recently been named as Alberta coaches for the 2011 Canada Winter Games team.

Riders On Board Head Coach Jared Anderson has initiated another basic coach training course at Canada Olympic Park November 28 – 30.

The focus on coach training is in keeping with Riders’ philosophy of developing from the grass roots to high performance and enabling multiple opportunities in the sport – competition, careers, life long love of snowboarding.

Established in 2000, Riders on Board is Canada’s largest and longest running snowboard club with over 700 riders trained to date. Current and alumni riders and coaches include: 2010 and NDG athletes, junior world competitors, Canada Winter Games medalists, Canadian SlopeStyle Champion, the youngest rider to podium at a US Open.

Sick new park at Panorama

Panorama Mountain Village, B.C. – Monday, November 3rd, 2008 – For the Showoff Terrain Park Designer, Eric Lange, Christmas came early last week, as he eagerly watched over 200 feet of brand new boxes roll into Panorama Mountain Village.

The shipment included two 24ft Straight Boxes, a 24ft 8/16 Flat Down Box, a 32ft Roller Coaster to Kicker Box, a 34ft 12/10/12 Flat Down Flat Box, a 34 ft 12/10/12 Down Flat Down Box, and a 36ft 10/16/10 Battleship Box.

“This is the biggest shipment we’ve ever received”, claims Lange. “They look even better than I imagined. I’m excited and freestyle riders should be too.” Lange won’t give away all of his secrets for the new terrain park, but here’s an idea of what to expect.
Last year, the park was divided into the upper rail park and the lower jump park. This year, the rail line and jump line will run parallel to each other down the entire length of Showoff, increasing the number of back to back jumps and/or rails to approximately twelve, compared to last year’s six.
Most jumps will have double take-offs, varying in size from medium to extra-large.
A permanent “Big Air” jump will be built at the base of the park, to provide local pro’s with something to train on.
The park program and design is being built with progression in mind. The Showoff Terrain Park is for intermediate and advanced riders and will offer a gradual increase in difficulty from medium to extra-large. An entry level terrain park will offer small and medium features out of sight from the chairlift.
The new Showoff Terrain Park will be supervised by a full-time employee and a group of volunteers that will ensure all features are safe, educate users on progression and etiquette, and suggest appropriate features to match the skill level of riders.
The Small-Medium Terrain Park will be situated in the night skiing area and will have more surface features and plenty of small jumps for beginners to build confidence.

The snowmaking department is currently focusing their efforts on Showoff, preparing the run for pre-season race training in November. This increased snow coverage will facilitate the early construction of park features, and if weather permits, Lange plans to have part of the terrain park ready for opening day on December 12th.

New coach in town.

Calgary Snowboard Club hires former X games and US open winner Scott Gaffney as head coach of Snowboardcross team.

(November 5th, 2008 – Calgary, Ab) Calgary Snowboard Club is proud to announce the hiring of Scott Gaffney to our coaching team. Scott Gaffney will be the head coach of the High Performance SnowboardCross team. Scott Gaffney was one of the fastest snowboarders on the planet for almost a decade, winning such events as X games, US open and Whistler World Cup. He spent the latter part of his professional career being filmed and having his picture taken, appearing in such media as Standard films releases and Transworld snowboarding magazine. TEAM CSC is proud of the successes of riders that have trained with us, including current Olympic hopefuls Matt Morison, Mike Robertson, Korath Wright (BHM) and Masaki Shiba (JPN). We feel that Scott’s experience and coaching will add to this winning legacy of the Calgary Snowboard Club. Our alumni have gone on to win or podium in world cups and junior world championships, and we look forward to Scott bringing his winning qualities into coaching with the team.

On what makes a good team environment

Scott Gaffney: The joy of competition can be lost pretty quickly. Competitions can be stressful. As a competitor I remember and appreciate those key individuals that reminded me of the balance that’s needed; that we are snowboarding, we are here to have fun, and compete.

We are accepting registrations. If you are interested in training with Calgary Snowboard Club, please contact info@snowboardcoach.ca or visit our website at http://www.snowboardcoach.ca/
